Scott L. Eckstein, Managing Director

Scott Eckstein has over 35 years of diverse research, analysis, development, operations, and education experience in the senior living space. Hr has been, and continues to be, directly involved in senior living projects throughout the United States, South and Central America, Europe, Africa, and Asia and specializes in providing strategic analysis, acquisitions, development, education, and operations advisory solutions for an aging planet. His senior living experience began in the nascent days of senior housing. He has helped promote the creation of purpose-built environments for senior wellness, lifestyles and care as well as having specialized in the creation and operation of a unique range of residential alternatives for the aging population worldwide. Eckstein has held management positions at numerous senior living operators: Brookdale, Emeritus (now Brookdale), Aegis Living, Sunrise Senior Living and ARV Assisted Living (now Atria).  In addition, he was also the Director of Business Development at WellAWARE Systems (now part of Best Buy), a pioneer in the senior tech space. Eckstein is the Adjunct Professor of Senior & Later Livig at the University of Nevada, at Las Vegas (UNLV) and was also the Director of the Senior Living Program at Boston University’s School of Hospitality Administration as well as a Clinical Assistant Professor and Senior Living Executive in Residence at the Granger Cobb Institute for Senior Living in the Carson College of Business at Washington State University (in which whose formation he was actively involved.)

Richard Keeling, Managing Director

Richard is a Chartered Surveyor based for much of his professional career in Central London in the UK.

During the early years of his career, Richard Keeling’s real estate grounding was based in the premiere private medical area around Harley Street in London’s West End providing valuable experience in the wider healthcare sector.

With time spent at Colliers International in the specialized healthcare team, then with his own company Aviso Consulting and now as Managing Director for Active Living International – Europe, he spent many years dealing exclusively in the UK and European healthcare market. Advising a wide range of healthcare professionals, including operators, developers, investors, and government bodies. Richard’s focus has included:

  • Primary care
  • Secondary and acute care
  • Psychiatric care and gerontology
  • Skilled nursing
  • Seniors Housing and Retirement Communities

During his career he has represented or advised numerous corporations as far afield as the UK to China including:

  • Bupa. Assisted in the acquisition of Richmond Healthcare a leading UK CCRE operator.
  • Sunrise Assisted Living. Valuation/ Advisory advice on the UK portfolio.
  • Barchester Healthcare. Consultancy and valuation advice to the group with a large high end portfolio of skilled nursing and dementia care homes.
  • Harley Street Advisory Group. A group of clinicians, operators and landowners focused on promoting the Harley Street medical area and raising the international profile.
  • Partnerships in Care (UK / US). Consultancy advice to an expanding residential care group for patients with a range of mental disorders.
  • King Edward VII Hospital for Officers. Advisory services to a leading London based not for profit hospital. The hospital of choice for the British Royal Family.
  • Union Life (China). Design and advisory services to a large retirement community development.
Richard Keeling

Casey Moore, Managing Director

Casey Moore, Active Living International partner, is a finance executive with extensive capital markets experience in the seniors housing and long-term care industry. He has an in-depth understanding of the various capital sources and structures used for financing new and existing seniors’ developments.

During his years in the senior housing industry, Moore has served as:

· Managing Director, Senior Housing & Healthcare, Lument

· Director, Seniors Housing, Berkeley Point Capital

· Principal, Seniors Housing, Prudential Mortgage Capital Corporation

· Senior Managing Director, Seniors Housing, Red Mortgage Capital

A native of New Mexico, Casey received his MBA in finance and accounting from Boston College and his bachelor’s degree from the University of North Texas.

Marco Alvarez Jimenez, Managing Director

Marco Alvarez is the Latin America Managing Partner of Active Living International responsible for all aspects of the firm’s strategy, team and operations in South and Central America. Marco has 10 years of entrepreneurial and C-Level experience in the nascent seniors housing and services industry in Latin America. He has also carried out senior living and healthcare assignments in Europe and the United States. He is CEO and operator of adult day centers, home healthcare agencies and an institute dedicated to developing professional caregivers in Mexico City. Marco is founder and board member of the Mexican Seniors Housing, Adult Day Centers and Services Association as well as a board member and chair of the international chapter of the National Adult Day Services Association in the United States.

He holds a joint M.S. in Finance from Harvard, Instituto de Estudios Bursatiles de Madrid, IEB and Universidad Anahuac, Mexico City and a specialty degree in Gerontology from Universidad La Salle in Mexico City. Marco is fluent in Spanish, English and French.

Paula Hertel, Director

Paula Hertel supports Active Living International and its clients in strategic operations and marketing and in evaluating feasibility. She has spent 30 years focusing on improving service delivery systems for the elderly in executive management positions and consulting projects throughout the U.S. In addition, she has in-depth experience and a proven track record in senior housing and assisted living operations, team training, regulatory compliance and new program development. Paula serves on the California Assisted Living Association Board as Director and Co-Chair of the Education Committee, is a frequent author for the California Healthcare Foundation CalAIM initiative and holds a MSW in mental health studies from San Jose State.

Nancy Schier Anzelmo, Director

Nancy Schier Anzelmo is a dedicated gerontologist with nearly 30 years of experience in senior housing and long-term care. She holds a master’s degree in Gerontology from San Diego State University and a bachelor’s in Sociology with a concentration in Gerontology from Appalachian State University. As the principal of Alzheimer’s Care Associates LLC, Nancy specializes in developing memory support communities for individuals with Alzheimer’s and related dementias. Her expertise spans residential care, assisted living, skilled nursing, rehabilitation, and adult day programs. She played a key role in establishing California’s first dementia care communities in the 1990s and is a recognized speaker and industry leader. Nancy is also a faculty member at Sacramento State University and Co-Founder of Connected Horse, an equine-guided therapy program for those with dementia and their caregivers. She serves on the board of the California Assisted Living Association and lives near Sacramento with her family and horses.

David P. Collins, CEO Emeritus

David Collins has more than 35 years’ experience in seniors residential and healthcare including assisted living, memory care, and age restricted 55+ active adult communities such as CCRCs. He was the Managing Partner of Active Living International, a specialized advisory group providing strategic solutions for an ageing planet. In 1980 David and two partners founded, American Retirement Villas (ARV), at one time the largest assisted living company in the United States. As President of ARV Capital, David took the company public in 1995. He then led the sale of the company to Lazard Freres & Co., LLC in 2003. The ARV Assisted Living communities are now part of Atria.

From 2003 David worked in Europe where he served as President and Board Member of SensaraBenalmadena S.L., Spain's first residential community designed exclusively for people over the age of fifty-five. The London Daily Telegraph called Sensara “…the best retirement development in Europe.”

David has addressed audiences worldwide on the ageing of societies and the problems related to changes in tradition and culture as societies age in place. He has been actively involved in major senior living developments in China, Brazil, Spain, Portugal and Mexico, advising on acquisitions and feasibility studies. He has extensive experience in sales and marketing for the development of communities for retirees and the elderly.

David served on public and private boards including DABVSA, a home healthcare company in Mexico City and Urbania an international real estate development firm in Malaga, Spain.
